Montreal has a great reputation as one of the best cities in the world for students. And the reputation is warranted! Alongside our great schools and campuses, we offer some of the best of what students need, from bars/clubs to restaurants to cheap rent.
However, many students are living within the confines of the McGill ghetto downtown. While it definitely has its perks, there are plenty of other neighbourhoods in Montreal that offer similar if not better living spaces for students!
So why not jump the walls of the ghetto and take a look at 5 Montreal neighbourhoods that are AMAZING for students!
#1: Plateau-Mont-Royal
We're sure a lot of you were expecting this one to show up, but the Plateau is packed with students for a reason.
First off, the location is amazing. You're right near the heart of downtown Montreal and close to McGill and Concordia, but not too close for comfort. It's also full of parks and some of the best restaurants that the city has to offer.
There is always something fun happening in the Plateau, even during the pandemic. But it's never too noisy or overwhelming to live in.
#2: Saint-Henri
We bet you weren't expecting this one though! Perhaps I'm biased because I am a student currently living in Saint-Henri, but let me tell ya there is so much to love about this quaint spot.
Some of the most delicious restaurants in all of Montreal are located in Saint-Henri, like Pizzeria Adamo and Tacos Frida. It's also on the canal, so you can take long walks and bike rides along the water whenever you please!
The rent is also far cheaper here than most other spots you'll hear about, which is perfect for low student budgets. Saint-Henri also features a prominent metro station and frequent busses to get you anywhere in town.
#3: Mile-End
The Mile-End is so close to the Plateau that real estate sites typically bundle the two together. But they're actually quite different. For one, Mile-End is a little further from universities and downtown than the Plateau, but this leads to generally cheaper rent.
The Mile-End was once where all the Montreal artists resided, and it's clear why. It's packed full of unique and interesting shops and restaurants that never cease to be fun to visit.
This neighbourhood also includes Montreal staples like the two rival bagel stores St. Viateur and Fairmount. But this doesn't stop the area from being full of relatively inexpensive apartments that are perfect for students.
#4: The Village
The Village has a reputation within Montreal as a party-spot. Depending on what kind of student you are, this can be a huge pro or a huge con.
If you enjoy rowdy nights out, this area will be perfect for you. It doesn't hurt that rent is inexpensive and it's just a short transit away from downtown Montreal.
On the other side of the coin, the Village can be noisy at night depending on where you are situated. If you prefer calmness and silence, it might be best to look elsewhere.
#5: Notre-Dame-de-Grâce
NDG doesn't come up nearly enough on similar lists. First of all, it has some of the best transit in the city, with busses, metros, and trains coming through at every moment. It also has the unique combination of feeling like a bit of a suburb while being incredibly close to downtown.
The area is full of local stores and bars (I will always give a shout-out to Next-Door Pub when I can) and has relatively cheap rent, especially for how close it is to downtown and Westmount.
If you prefer a quiet neighbourhood and don't mind taking the bus to school, NDG may be the perfect place for you.
